Units of Inquiry

Unit 1: Family Histories: September 5th- October 28th

Our first unit is entitled Family Histories.

The central idea is: “Family generations shape and influence how our world changes over time.” During this unit, we will follow 3 main lines of inquiry:
1. personal family histories,
2. historical changes over time
3. cultural connections

In school we will explore the concepts of ‘connection’ and ‘change’ by looking at family trees, videos, biographies of famous people, autobiographies, timelines, photos from the past and present and many other activities and learning tools.

You can support your child’s learning during this unit in many ways too.

Why not take this opportunity to share some stories with your child about their past/your own childhood/family folklore?  Look through some old photos and talk about the people in them and how they are connected to your child.

Rome is an excellent example of past and present living side by side and there are many important people, places and monuments in our immediate community which can be discussed/visited with your child.

Visiting any of the Roman museums will expose your child to key figures in the city’s past.  The papal rooms in the Vatican museum and castle are good examples of how the city was under Catholic rule; while the Capitol museum provides an excellent opportunity to look at statues of ancient Rome’s leaders.  The graveyard at the Pyramid can be an interesting place to look at ‘what we leave behind’ and also has excellent English language opportunities.

You can share biographies and autobiographies of people from the past and the present with your child.  Our school library has many to choose from and you may find mini biographies in newspapers and magazines too.

Any discussions with your child which help them to connect with the key concepts of this unit will be helpful to them, so have a chat about the past and enjoy getting in touch with a bit of history!
